October 15, 2003Has anyone ever changed out a chain driven transfer case and swapped in a gear driven one. I have a 74 f-150 with a 82 ford transfer case in it (np208) and now i have a 205 gear driven unit and was wondering if it would bolt right up or what i would have to do to get it in there. Both transmission are 4 speeds, the newer model is a borg-warner and the other one is a 435 any help would be appreciated

October 15, 2003I`m not a ford guy, but i know that the NP208 and NP205`s on chevys have a different bolt pattern to the tranny...
October 16, 2003thanks for answering. I don`t know either, i have a parts truck with the other 4 speed in it i was just looking for an` easy out.
October 24, 2003i know on the chevys you usually have to lengthen or shorten the driveshafts. to solve that just find a truck in a junk yard with that set up and use its driveshafts.
October 25, 2003I have the whole parts truck to get the driveshafts out of, i just heard and don`t know, that a borg-warner is stronger than a np435 both are 4 speeds and i was wanting to keep the stronger one and put the 205 behind it because everyone says it is strong
November 3, 2003keep the np 435--becaus eborg-warner cases arent that strong and dont have good reputations----the NP 205 is a real reputable case and is perferable by four wheelers --though it doesnt have a very low low range --it does make up for it in strength
November 3, 2003the transfer case i have is a np208 chain drive behind a borg-warner transmission, i heard the borg-warner was stronger than the np435 transmission so i was going to keep it in my good truck. the parts truck has the np435 transmission and the np205 transfer case and i was going to just change transer case`s if it would bolt up, because i figured it would be easier and because i heard the borg-warner was stronger. thank you for the input, maybe with this information you might see my point better or be able to tell me about the strength difference

November 3, 2003Yep, the Borg-Warner is plenty strong. I have the T18 in my truck right now. Tows great, nice and strong. Only got a 4.XX first gear though, where the 435 has a 6.XX I believe. So the 435 would be better for crawling around. The 208 is an aluminum case, so swapping to the 205 would be an exponential increase in strength, especially with the gears instead of the gears and chain.
