Another well thought out response by Dave. There are a huge number of factors in the amount of resonance an exhaust will give off. There are also a great numbers of factors beyond the muff that will change exhaust tone.
A muffler chamber grabs certain frequencies, depending on design. The same design with a heavier case won`t resonate as much and cause the often hated highway drone.
Mtmer also made a good point about people using mufflers to try to make the truck loud. If you want loud and lack of resonance, skip the muffs and adjust the tone using a resonated tip, or a small bullet type inline resonator as close as possible to the exhaust exit.
By design, a well engineered exhaust will sound somewhat flat, as it will absorb sound frequencies while helping equalize flow. If you`re hearing individual pulses at other than low revs, you`re hearing sound waves banging together within the system.
