February 5, 2004I have a 94 f-150 4x4, with a 5 spd manual trans. When I am at a stop light waiting for it to turn green, my truck is hard to get into 1st gear. Any ideas of what could be going on?

February 5, 2004Shift forks. Pull the top plate off (yes that`s right, that means dropping the transmission...or pull out the seat and carpet and then take off the tranny tunnel) and see if can see anything. Take a close look at the shift forks and make sure there aren`t any shavings in the fluid.
February 5, 2004or the synchronizers for first gear. one thing that will help, is when you can, let off the brake and let it slowly start to coast just a little, then put it in first. it will go into gear easier.
February 5, 2004If it were the syncro`s it`d be popping out of gear.
Try pumping the clutch a couple of times and see if that does anything. Sometimes it works for me and sometimes nothing. I got a `87 F150 with the same tranny......Mazda M5OD.
February 5, 2004I usually let it roll a bit and then put it into gear, or I go into second first then up to first, for some reason that works to. It is not hard to get into 1st all the time, just sometimes.
February 5, 2004Just make sure you don`t "man-handle" it. They don`t take to kindly to being shoved/jammed/forced into gear....at all.
February 6, 2004Yep. Adjustments ended when they stopped putting the 4spds in `em, which was 1991 I believe.
February 6, 2004Try bleeding the clutch. If it isn`t disengaging all the way it will be hard to shift. Detent plungers stop it from popping out of gear, not synchros.
February 7, 2004Dave syncronizers dont always make it pop outve gear... Mine wore out and it would go in every gear except reverse and it made a grinding noise. They quit the 4spds in 1987 when they started the 5 spd.And from what i know of the m50d the hard shifting at a stop is common with them and mine never really had a problem with it it happened maybe 5 times that i can think of and i drove it every day for over a year... If you put it in reverse then 1st or another gear and then 1st it usually helps.
