August 14, 2004I just bought an `86 chevy 4x4 with a 700r4 tranny with a `70`s 350 4 bolt. The original 305 was ripped out and replaced with this rebuilt (so I was told) 350 with an Edelbrock 600cfm 4 bbl, long tube headers, a/c and smog removed. The motor runs strong, but the transmission skips in overdrive. It runs fine in 1st through drive, but soon as it shifts to overdrive, it skips and shudders. Can anyone tell me what could be causing this?

August 15, 2004you have to determine if its the engine skipping or if its the transmission "slipping" If its slipping it will take exessive RPM`s to get it into overdrive. 700r4 transmissions are junk if you ask me to begin with, but for certain applications they can do the job.
August 16, 2004Well, it may be junk. I`m not a big fan of the 700r4 either, but I like the overdrive for highway miles. I`ve got one in my `88 Iroc that works really well. Anyway, it can`t be the engine if it doesn`t skip in the first 3 gears. It only shudders in overdrive.
