June 23, 2004My son had an almost tragic accident--he was lucky! He has a Chevrolet I think 1996- truck dont know the the model--but will find out. He thinks the rear axle just busted. The truck rolled he said 3 times. Is this possible? Could the rear axle just brake in the middle of driving? Is it because of hard driving? Its an older truck and he just bought it about 5 months ago--Is anyone aware of something like this happening?

June 23, 2004its possible to have an axle shaft break while you are driving on the street, i had a buddy who broke a ford 9" axle shaft while pulling out into traffic. but if the shaft was broke in your sons axle it would want to slide out, as in the whole wheel would come out with the shaft.
June 23, 2004could it have happened from driving the truck too hard?ie, spinning out, etc. The truck is in pieces I am told.
June 23, 200490% of the time it`s from spinning the tires. axle shafts are made to twist only so much and when they`re twisted beyond that point they snap.
