October 23, 2003Does anyone know of any performance mods for a `97 Ford 2.3 4cyl engine. I have put on a K&N air filter but I have not found anything else. I would really like to find a supercharger or a turbo for it. Any input is greatly appreciated.
October 26, 2003i dont think there are any. but you could pull that little 4 banger out and drop in a 4.6 v8.
October 26, 2003No kidding, 2.3L? I know I know, it`s not the size that matters. But damn thats a small engine for a full size truck. I`d go for the V8 too.

October 26, 2003mods-piece together a better intake tube with PVC, but then again, maybe ssd4u.com might have an intake, e-fan, DZK underdrive pulley, you can port and polish the intake and head, a turbo is available i believe, you could get a custom chip burned, off hand i can`t think of the company who can get you a cam...duh-muffler of your choice...
a 4.6? i don`t know of anyone who`s dropped one into a ranger yet...i don`t think it`ll fit-i don`t think the engine bay isn`t big enough...but it`s big enough for a 351W, a 302 from a f-150 or 5.0 from a mustang...but if you`re going to go engine swap, i`d stay away from the idea of a 3.8 engine-notorious for blowing head gaskets i hear, that and you`d need to give the truck a body lift to fit it.
i hope some of this helps

October 26, 2003Dave is on the right track. The T-Birds and the SVO Mustangs used a 2.3 turbo, and those would be the source to make some HP out of that engine.
The SVO engine made almost at much HP as the V8, and was lighter. If you can find a turbo block in the junk yard, they can be built to turn 350-400 HP without huge amounts of cash. They are very stout blocks and will also handle nitrous along with boost.
I have an old Truckin` mag somewhere that had a Ranger with a turbo motor and nitrous that was one of the quickest trucks at a shootout. There were several blower V8s on hand that it beat.
November 2, 2003a 4.6 v-8 will fit into a ranger. you might have to modify a little but it isnt too hard. my dad put a 350 in a 46 willy`s cj-2a jeep, that is about 1/2 the size of a ranger. the money you`ll end up having in that 4 banger souping it up, it would actually be a lot cheaper and easier to drop in a 281 v8 "4.6" or a 351 "5.0". and you wont get the same power out of that 4 banger.
November 2, 2003Yep, a 5.0 is a 351. A 4.6 will not fit into a Ranger without EXTREME mods. The "Romeo" motors are quite a bit bigger than the 5.0/5.8s. A 302 is 18.75" wide, a 351 is 21". A 4.6 SOHC.....28 5/8" wide. Do you notice the small difference? Just for comparison, a 460 is 26" wide. Not to mention the height, which is the same as a 460, @ 26", where as a 302 is 20.75" tall and a 351 is at 23.75". Yep, getting a 4.6 to fit in a Ranger is a small feat......

November 27, 2003a v8 WILL fit into a ranger. ive seen 454bb`s in S-10s and also in chevy LUV`s. like i said my dad put a 350sb with a TH350 in a 46 willy`s CJ2-A and like i said that is a lot smaller than a ranger.

dude, "79ChevyK-10", what`s going on here? of course a V8 will fit in a ranger-no argument there, but no one to date has cramed a 4.6 into a ranger (which seemed to be your debate)...at least without modifying the frame, fenders maybe, firewall, radiator support...you`ll also have to get a custom set of headers made for a 4.6 in a ranger...but we all know V8`s can go into rangers (i have a 302 in my `86 ranger)...oh, it`s not the 281 that you`re thinking of, the block you`re probably thinking about is a 289, a 302 is the same as a 5.0L, and a 351 is about the same as 5.8L...i know, i know, "how the hell is the 4.6 (also a duel over-head cam = 16 valves) too big when the 351 (close to 5.8L) will fit?" again, you have to look at how the width of the engines compare to one another...it`s a crazy world.
anyhow, i hope this guy has gotten some ideas or has done something already...

November 27, 20035.8 is 351. Also a DOHC 4.6 is 32 valves, not 16. 16 valve 4.6s are SOHC.
December 6, 2003Hey dont be so hard on the 2.3l,no power but its the most dependable motor ive owned, and im die hard chevy.233000 on a 93 ranger few oil changes, dont smoke, two plug changes, one starter, one timing belt, original owner. IT JUST WONT DIE!!!!!!! You might try Midwest Motorsports theres a few of them around the country,They use to carry heads, cams and such,i think for pony stocks.
