November 3, 2003On a `98 Chevrolet 1 ton with 350 and fuel injected carb set up. Going along the truck will suddendly lose power and stall out. If the truck sits for a few minutes and then you start it back it will do fine for a little while and then acts up again. The fuel pump is suspect as it has been running longer and creating racket. Is there a way to test fuel pump instead of replacing to find out?
November 3, 2003To test your fuel pump, pop the hood and look at your fuel pump. There should be 3 lines going/coming to it. The tank line, the return line, and the line that takes the fuel to the engine itself. Follow the line that goes up towards the fuel injection place, (im at a loss of words on newer chevy trucks) and take that line off where it bolts to the intake manifold or wherever. Then have a friend go in the truck and crank it over. If the fuel pump works, it will spit gas out.
November 3, 2003his fuel pump is an electric in-tank fuel pump, or at least it should be. if you turn the key to on (don`t start the engine) and listen down the filler neck tube, you should here a whirrling noise. but id replace the fuel filter before takling the fuel pump! it may be dirty and restricting flow.
and i dunno where your hearing the racket noise from?
November 3, 2003Take it to a shop and have them pull codes. Go from there.
November 3, 2003shows how much i know about newer chevys huh! Maybe i should get with the program!
November 4, 2003OK ..Question Single or Dual fuel tanks?.. Type 1 If you have a Throttle Body unit, some where, on top of the engine, in the fuel line is a fitting with a black cap on it that looks like the old style A/C charge fittings. When you remove the cap you`ll see a schrader valve, like you see in your tire. Connect a gauge there. With the truck running you should have between 9 and 13 psi. If not the pump`s bad. ..... Type 2 If you take the air cleaner off and you have a large rectangular black plug with a big cable going to it in the middle of the intake manifold just behind throttle plate .... Replace the fuel pump .. Just did one ... same symptoms .... I have dual tank .... 3 fuel pumps, one in each tank and a transfer pump on the frame. The front tank`s fuel pump is the one that runs the engine. Mine cost $252.00, only way it comes is complete with sending unit ......
