February 26, 2004So In my own little happy world the answer to my recent woes is to remove the bad a/c condensor (which has turned my truck into a screaming banshee)buy a passenger side alternator mount and new alternator and add it in in place of the bad condensor. This seems like a good idea because I can install hook up the wires and still use stock serpentine belt system. But being a more is better guy does not mean I know a whole lot about actual behavoirs of currents and hertz`s and ohms. So my question to all is this...... If I do this.... will I turn my truck into a huge ball of flame by frying all the electrical systems as I start the beast up after such a wild modification? Looking for some help.... got any?
February 26, 2004This will work, but you will need to wire them correctly, so like you say, you don`t fry you electical system. I`ve seen guys at stereo shops do this so they can power multiple amps, so i would see if the even have a wiring kit available.
February 28, 2004First off, I`m assuming your A/C Compressor, (the part attached to the engine that`s belt driven), went bad and not your A/C Condensor, (the condensor is in front of the radiator, behind the grille). If you can make mounting brackets to keep the belt in line, get the alternator spin in the right direction, (if you have a serpentine belt set-up, you may have to add an idler pulley), then find an RV/Motorhome dealer or parts house. They have kits to wire up two alternators .....
February 28, 2004Just make sure you have a shop remove the refridgerant....wouldn`t want you to freeze your hand with that stuff.
March 1, 2004Thanks for all the help... so far to date the stealership just wants the bank to repair everything.... the custom engine shops don`t want to help unless they can pull my engine and throw in some headers and cams for some more of my precise money. And yes it is the compressor.... I feel like such an ass... I will try a motor home place today... but does a second alternator require a second battery? Plus until I can get it fixed is there any idea on how to remove the rest of the ac system? Oh and the freon thing is in the bag, The local on base auto port has a collection system for it.
March 4, 2004so you are putting in another alternator? may i ask why. i would think that is overkill unless you are running alot of lights and a big stereo. most alternators will flow 60 amps more than enough to keep the battery happy and charged. but to answer your question no you dont NEED another battery if you run two alternators
