April 9, 2001You can look into getting it re-wound, but I would just suggest a high output alt. check out Mr. Alternator and Wrangler NW Power Products.
April 10, 2001It would cost more to have it rewound, the field coil, stator coil, diodes, brushes, and regulator all have to be of the same power rating or one (or more) of them will burn up if you run them beyond what they are rated for, they would basically have to gut it and put all new parts in.
Take the previous suggestion and just buy a high output version.
Something else that might work is (if you have room) installing a second alternator, but it would require a special controller to get the output phases to syncronize, if they don`t syncronize the phases cut each other off and then your output voltage drops.
April 11, 2001The mechanical man offers a 140-200 amp (saw it in the back of OFF-ROAD. I think it may be Summit that offers a 225 amp.
April 14, 2001In the past, I`ve used second batteries instead of upping the alt.. and I hooked up all audio to the second battery and hooked the charging system to it.. ran 4 12" alpines and a 1000W alpine V12 amp, alpine deck, alpine changer, eq, second amp for the mids and highs with no problems....
the 600W V12 I used in my car with 12" sub on the stock deck and speakers gave me problems when I pumped out the tunes.. it cuase the car to idle rough and run like crap till I turned it down..
