November 17, 2002DAMN, i just read kicker is coming out with a new Solo-baric L7, labled the solo-X it is a 18" solo baric that will pound that crap out of any other sub. sh*t the sub weighs 100lbs by itself.
November 17, 2002Out pound any other sub? Hmm, we`ll have to see.
Digital Designs has been making subs that weigh over 100 pounds for years now, as have many other companies. DD now has a 17 inch sub that is supposed to be designed for supurb sound quaility, yet it handles 1500 rms and has an x-max of 30mm. Resonant Engineering has an 18 inch driver that takes 1600 rms and has 32mm x-max. Treo is another company out that makes killer SPL subs, 1200 rms (but has proven in competition they can handle much more) and over 35mm of x-max.
Right now the 15L7 only sits at 16.25mm of one way throw, not even 1/2 that of the Treo. Although some of that will be made up with by the larger cone area of the square subs vs round. I am sure the 18 will have more throw as well, although I don`t forsee Kicker doubling it compared to their 15.
Resonant Engineering XXX
I`m not trying to bust on Kicker, I think they make great products. But so do dozens of other companies, and it seems to me that a few people here have forgotten that. Every recommendation for everything seems to be Kicker, no matter what. Now what fun is it when everyone has the same stereo?

November 17, 2002i know, its not the absolute best, im just saying that it will most likely be a great sub. i guese i used the wrong words. i know there are subs greater than that, but they are pricy, i would just like to hear 2-18" solo-x`s. i ve heard 2 15" L7`s with 1000 watts powering each, and that hurt.
November 18, 2002The new solo 18 is quite nice. We sell them at work. The hit unbelievably low. And the cool factor is really high (insert Tim the Toolman Taylor grunt <here> )But at 100lbs each and 5000watts RMS each (10,000 watts peak), they are way too costly to power. With the 100 lbs from the sub, the (probably) 100 lbs from the enclosure and the 100-150 lbs for the amps you will need to power ONE sub correctly, your going to need some stiffer springs, or bags to keep your truck sitting at it`s current height after you drop in all that equipment. I haven`t heard from our Kicker rep yet but if the 15L7 requires a 6 cubic foot box for maximum SPL then I shudder to think what the 18" will need.
