September 12, 2004Well the truck just dies the other day. No sputter or nothing jsut died. So I broke out the multimeter and started testing things. Turns out the HEI ignition coil was bad. So i replaced the coil. Still no start. Moved on to the Cap, Rotor button, and rotor. Still no dice. I had Autozone test the ignition module and it tested good. I metered the 12V+ wires that feed the coil and the grounds and they seemed fine. Anyone else have any ideas? Could it be the pickup coil?

September 12, 2004I am going to assume based on what you have said that this is on a Chevy truck. The magnetic pickups on those are notorious for going out. Best bet is to probably just replace the distributor. Depending on the year.
September 12, 2004yes, it could be the pickup, easy way to test....
pop off the cap/rotor, you will need to pull the module out slightly, and pull the 2 wire connecter to the module from the distributer.
hook your multimeter leads to each of the two wires, set it on AC voltage. crank the enigne, and see if you get a varrying AC voltage. it will be low like .4V if it does nothing, then i would look at replacing it.
the modules seem to burn up really easy thouh, so good way to test the pickup coil.
September 12, 2004Easier way to test, on Chevy, is hook up a test light to the rpm terminal on the distributor. If the light flashes, cool. If it stays on or off then the pickup is bad ...... Another thing, Take off the cap, crank the engine and make sure the rotor is turning. If not, bad timing chain or distributor gear is shot .........
September 15, 2004Well the coil and all checked out, so I pulled the fuel line off and cranked it. No gass. So I'm guessing its the fuel pump. I have a new one now and I will install it tonight to make sure. Oh yeah, a little gass in teh carb and it started right up. :-) At least until it burnt that gass out.
September 15, 2004you told us it was a spark issue..
i still dont know how dumping gas down the carb when it goes not spark made it run.
details needed next time
September 15, 2004it wasn't sparking. I got that resolved but found out after the fact that the fuel pump went out too. Thanks for the help.
April 13, 2015Less complicated way to test, about Chevy, is meet up any test lighting towards the rpm terminal within the rep. In the event the lighting whizzes, trendy. When that continues about as well as off next the pickup truck is bad.. One more thing, Take off the actual top, prank the actual engine as well as ensure the actual rotor is rotating. Or else, bad timing cycle as well as rep products is photo..
