July 9, 2005OK, I have a 1990 Chevy Suburban 4x4 that I upgraded with a 14 bolt rear and a Dana 60 front. It's also got a 350 and 400 trans and 241 transfer case, and I've been really happy with it now. But I was looking to get get something a little newer. I've been looking at some Ford Excursions lately . 2001 to be exact. My question is how do they compare? I like the straight axle and the v10 but I really don't know what they can handle and what problems they might have. I run 42"s right now on the Suburban no problem. Are the axles on the Ford enough to handle a 39.5 tire and some mud? This will be my main vehicle, daily driver also. Any problems with the v 10 and tranny? Yeah, this is a heavy ride for sure, I know. I think I will keep the Chevy for a project. Thanks.

July 9, 2005Yes the Excursion has a Dana 60 front and a Sterling 10.5 in the rear I believe. I think 2001 was the year they switched from the Dana 50 fronts to the Dana 60. Either way you'll be fine. I ran 38"s on my 2000 for 3 years with no problems and I had a Dana 50. The only problem I see is with that V-10. You will be getting horrible gas mileage, and I mean literally 4-6 miles per gallon. If you can find a diesel model, that would be much better.
