August 21, 2005My 94 Ranger 4x4 XLT overdrive auto trans with 4.0 engine just purchased. Does not shift to overdrive. Trans very strong in all gears escept no o.d., runs great. BUT, took wife to store used reverse (was ok), moved forward (ok), wife returned to go home, truck would not move in any gear. No noise. Does Ranger have any transmission electronic controls or all gear positions mechanical? All linkage works good from gear shift lever to trans. Can anyone out there respond, any ideas? Jim

August 22, 2005I would start with checking the fluid. Not just for level, but also coloration (sp?) and smell. If the fluid is dark and smells bad then it could be the bands/clutches burned up. It also could be the torque converter went bad. rare, but it happens.
I am pretty sure the 94 does have some computer controlled shifting, but I don't think it would keep it from working at all. I think it would just make it shift at the wrong speeds.
I am sure there are others out there that know more about this than me, so hopefully they will respond and correct anything I am wrong about.
August 22, 2005I am not sure, but it also could have to do with the transfer case if it wont move at all. That would still not explain the OD problem though.
