December 18, 2006I recently purchased a 1973 caprice classic with a 400sb and a turbo400 Trans for $250. The car is old and is going to be a derby car. When I get back from Iraq I want to put the engine and Trans in an early-mid 70â€™s Blazer. The engine runs but needs to be rebuilt. I have done a rebuild once before, but I want to do it right and get some extra power out of it. Iâ€™m also not sure if it would be better to build a 377 or keep it a 400.Iâ€™m looking to spend 3-4k. Any advice would help. Are there any good books anyone could recommend?

December 20, 2006you can get some cheap compression by putting small chamber double hump heads if you can find them,you will have to drill the steam holes between the combustion chambers.or get some flat top pistons with the open chamber heads.be careful you can get way to much to quick.smal chamber heads with flat top pistons will take some good gas.i have a destroked 400 ,377inch(a lot of work for a derby car,350 crank with 400 rods will have to use bearing spacers,be careful the bearing clearance will have to be juggeled to get it right because the rear main clearance will stack up if the bearing spacers are modified 400 main bearings.or have a good machine shop angle mill the heads and intake.maybe some 1.6 ratio rockers.
